Wine in Argentina

Two-thirds of all Argentine wine is produced in Mendoza

Vinos Finos are Argentina's best wines

Subregions of Mendoza are Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu

Grapes of Argentina are: (Major) Red: malbec, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, tempranillo (Spanish varietal), bonarda and sangiovese (Italian varietals). White: chardonnay, chenin blanc, savignon blanc, and torrontes.

 Selected quality wineries include:

Catena and Bodegas Esmeralda; Bodegas Lurton; Finca Flichman (Caballero de las Cepa Cabernet Sauvignon, for example); Bavarro Correas; Penaflor/Trapiche (Oak Cask reserve Malbec, for example); Santa Julia; Valentin Bianchi(its peppery Malbec is reputed to be one of the world's best wines under $10)

Typically there is no chaptalization (The process of adding sugar to the must before fermentation if the grapes have low sugar content so as to give the wine balance and higher alcohol content.) This procedure is legal (with certain restrictions) in France and Germany, but illegal in California and Italy, although addition of grape concentrate is allowed. Chaptalization is legal in other parts of the United States such as Oregon and New York.
